Christopher Miles (1928-2015) - An appreciation
The funeral service for Christopher Miles, the farmer who turned his land into Bletchingley Golf Course more than 20 years ago, was held at St Mary's Church on December 2nd.
He was instrumental in supporting the development of land that proved difficult for farming but ideally suited for golf. He was a familiar figure around the course for many years with Jean, his wife, maintaining the habits of a lifetime walking his dogs and taking satisfaction from successfully providing a new lease of life for his inheritance.
He took pleasure in chatting to members during his walks and watching the course mature into one of the best in Surrey.
Here is an appreciation from a member who enjoyed the chat with an 'English Gentleman.'
The Dawn Patrol
It seems an age ago now when I was a struggling member of what Christopher christened the Dawn Patrol. Nothing has changed of course in the sense that I'm still struggling, but more than 20 years ago four of us - Dave Hills and Andrew Taylor were other dawn patrollers - were out on the course often at 6.30am and 7am at the latest to miss the Saturday morning rush. And usually between the 12th green and 13th tee we met Christopher, or rather we encountered his canine companions first.
We stopped, exchanged pleasantries and continued our battle with what was once Christopher's property, but over the weeks and years the meetings lengthened and we explored many other conversational avenues. It was these encounters that provided me with a fascinating insight into an engaging individual, the head of a family with a considerable history and extensive roots stretching well beyond the Surrey countryside.
At first I characterised him as the local squire but this convenient label underestimated the man. Christopher was more suited in style and temperament to fill the role of what the Victorians regarded as the English Gentleman, courteous, thoughtful, and conscious of his inheritance and obligations, but wrestling with obstacles and pressures that made it difficult to maintain a traditional way of life and involved difficult choices.
The transition of the Miles estate from farmland to golf course was neither easy nor painless, nor achieved at the first attempt but I like to think that Christopher has given pleasure mixed with a bit of frustration of course to the many thousands who have stood on the 7th tee and dreamed of the ultimate hole in one, or made it their ambition to produce the perfect drive on the 11th to avoid hitting the moles and keeping the ball dry on the 12th, 13th and 17th .
I would also like to think that Christopher's forebears will congratulate him on the social and community dimension associated with what is now Bletchingley Golf Club, or might have been St Mary's.
