Lady Captain's Charity Challenge 2018
Dear Members,
One of the great pleasures of taking on this position of Lady Captain is the opportunity to choose and support a charity.
My Charity for this year is YMCA East Surrey. This is the Charity that my husband Steve has supported for many years now, taking on cycling challenges. As he has to put up with golf, golf, golf for at least 12 months, in return I am happy to support his charity. I have decided to set my own challenge and my aim is to walk the North Downs Way - 130 miles. Not all at once of course but split into 10 half marathons.
I have a wonderful support team of Bletchingley Ladies. Together we started at Dover on Saturday 7th April. Leg three is scheduled for Saturday 19th May, walking from Boughton Lees to Harrietsham. We hope to complete all 10 legs by the end of the summer and raise £3000 for the YMCA Yippee Scheme, supporting Disabled Children and their families. We are helping to provide essential equipment and special help required to support hundreds of children with disabilities and complex needs. Detailed information can be found at ymcaeastsurrey.org.uk.
We are so privileged to be able to put on our boots and walk out into the beautiful countryside so close to our homes. For so many young people, this will never be possible. For families with a disabled child, a trip to the countryside for a short walk is in many cases impossible, and for so many, a major & complicated expedition. Siblings suffer too, often restricted to the limited activities of a brother or sister, and holiday times can prove very challenging & distressing for families. At the Sovereign Centre in Reigate, plus a new centre at Banstead, children aged 5 – 11 enjoy the “playscheme” and are cared for in a safe and happy environment. I hope that you will be able to support me in my challenge and wish us luck with all those hills!
