Men’s Competitions & Matches
Well done to Steve James for winning the July midweek Stableford Division 1 with 36 points. I also have to mention Wally’s amazing performance in the Millenium Cup on July 10th with a net 65. Mind you I am sure that everyone not only knows the result already but will also be very au fait (sorry the French thing just won’t die away) with pretty much every shot along the way. Fortunately, with that score, there weren’t too many of them! Joking aside, you are a bloody legend, Wally.
The Surrey 5’s A Team today had yet another very impressive win over Lingfield on their patch. Very well done to Ian McGowan and his team and the best of luck in the semi-final against Roehampton.
I feel that I should also give Francesco Molinari a mention for a really inspired performance in one of the best British Opens in years. It was also good to see Tiger back up there amongst the leaders even if he didn’t quite make it.
New rules Tim Burke has kindly offered to help us all with the new rules coming in next year by explaining one of them each month. I have copied his first rule change below. Technically it isn’t actually his rule change so if it doesn’t work out well for you please don’t square up to him in the Spike Bar. New Rules Are Coming Since 2012 the R&A and USPGA has been working to modernise the rules of golf to make the game simpler, faster to play and to provide golfers with a single set of rules globally. These changes all take effect on the 1stJanuary 2019. In the build-up I will explain some of the new rules in my blog starting with the spirit of the game which is covered in Rule 1, and also a few of the rules which are being introduced to speed up play, some of which we could start to practice immediately in our non-competitive games. Spirit of the game • All players are expected to play in the spirit of the game by: • Acting with integrity – for example, by following the Rules, applying all penalties, and being honest in all aspects of play. • Showing consideration to others – for example, by playing at a prompt pace, looking out for the safety of others, and not distracting the play of another player. • Taking good care of the course – for example, by replacing divots, smoothing bunkers, repairing ball-marks, and not causing unnecessary damage to the course. Three simple rule changes to speed up play • Leave the flagstick in. There is no longer a penalty for striking an unattended flag when your ball lies on the green. • Take 3 minutes only to search for a lost ball. There is a reduction from 5 to 3 minutes in the new rules. • Play ready golf in strokeplay formats (medal and stableford) i.e. if you are ready to play then play, even if you are closer to the hole than a member of your group who is not ready. Remember you must still play in turn in all matchplay formats. |
