Americans introduce New Ryder Cup System

Less than a week after the U.S. Ryder Cup team endured another loss at Gleneagles, the PGA of America began the process of overhauling the current system.

PGA president Ted Bishop told GolfChannel.com that the association is in the process of creating a task force to look into the entire Ryder Cup system, from how captains are picked to the selection of the 12 team members and even the schedule of events during the matches.

"Basically we are giving the task force a blank canvas on all things on the Ryder Cup to give the PGA some input," Bishop said. "The PGA is willing to take a step back and listen to some people that are involved in the process."

According to Bishop, the task force will consist of 10 to 12 members who will be current and former players, former captains and PGA officials. Numerous sources have told GolfChannel.com the group will likely include Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods, Davis Love III and possibly Paul Azinger, the 2008 U.S. captain who has been mentioned as the next possible captain.

Bishop said the PGA will announce the makeup of the task force "in the next week or so."

Mickelson became the voice of change on Sunday at Gleneagles when he said the PGA has, "strayed from a winning formula in 2008," and now appears poised to become part of that process.

The PGA normally names a new captain after the association's annual meeting in November, but that time line has been scrubbed.

"There will be no captain announced in 2014. I don't know what the time frame would be but we are in no hurry to make that decision. We want to give the task force a chance to weigh in on a lot of things," Bishop said, adding, "We don't even have a short list of candidates (for the 2016 captain). That discussion hasn't been started."

3 Steps to Better Posture

Great golf posture is crucial for consistent, accurate and powerful ball striking.

You don't have to be an athlete to achieve great posture over the ball, and the tips on this page will work for golfers of all shapes and size.

1. Hold the club in front of your belly button with your arms and legs straight. Stand up tall with your shoulders pulled back and stick your chest out.

2. Tilt forwards making sure you tilt at the hips only. Your lower back should remain flat rather than rounded. Feel like you are pushing your behind backwards.

3. As the club lowers to touch the ground behind the ball, flex your knees slightly. Avoid making the mistake of many amateur golfers by over-bending your knees.
