Well Done Ladies!!!!!!
Congratulations to Geraldine Edwards and Debbie Rose on winning the Ladies Surrey Centenary Foursomes. The final was played at Cuddington Golf Club on Friday, 17 October. Their two opponents were from Roehampton and their combined handicaps were the same so no shots involved. Debbie and Geraldine started well and won the first hole, but then messed up the second. Going 1 up after 4, and then 4 up after 8, they were never down in the whole match.
Nerves kicked in a little on the last few holes, but they eventually won on the 17th, 2 & 1. The Surrey Captain was the referee on the day, and some of our Bletchingley members were there to celebrate with a glass of wine afterwards.
Range Balls
We are currently running low on balls for the range and it would be much appreciated if anyone who has spare or old golf balls they no longer want were donated to us for use on the range.
Rory McIlroy is taking a Break from Golf
Rory McIlroy is taking a break from tournament golf to focus on his legal situation with Horizon Sports Management, his former management company.
"I'm going to need time away from tournament golf to prepare for the trial over my legal dispute with Horizon Sports Management," McIlroy said. "The court-directed mediation process failed over the weekend to resolve the issue."
McIlroy was with Horizon for two years before leaving in May 2013 to start a new management company. In his lawsuit, he claims Horizon took advantage of his youth and lack of legal advice in his first agreement.
The agreed upon commissions entitled Horizon Sports Management to a 20% fee on all off-the-course income received by McIlroy. The golfer claims that the excessive commissions result in an unconscionable contract, and that an athlete of McIlroy's stature should not have to pay more than 7% to an agent as a result of earnings from endorsement deals. He alleges that he was young, naive and failed to have the support of legal counsel when he executed the agreement containing such a compensation structure. Horizon is countering by suing for a reported $3 million for a breach of contract.
Meditation talks failed to create an agreement between McIlroy and Horizon, and the case will have a February 2015 court date, according to the report.
McIlroy will now skip the European Tour's BMW Masters at the end of October and the PGA Tour's WGC-HSBC Champions the second week of November. (Last year, he finished tied for 24th and sixth, respectively, in those events.)
He's expected to return for the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai, the final event of the Euro Tour's 'Race to Dubai,' on Nov.20.
The February court date could affect McIlroy's tournament schedule for next year as well. He's expected to play the Euro Tour's Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship and the Omega Dubai Desert Classic in January. McIlroy skipped the entire "West Coast Swing" of the PGA Tour schedule last year and started his year at the Honda Classic near his home in Jupiter, Fla. This year, the Honda Classic begins on Feb. 26, less than two months before McIlroy will attempt to complete the career grand slam at the Masters.
World Match Play: Mikko Ilonen beats Henrik Stenson
Finland's Mikko Ilonen defeated world number five Henrik Stenson 3&1 to win the World Match Play at the London Club in Kent.
Ilonen, the world number 52, carded four birdies in a bogey-free round to seal the biggest win of his career.
Stenson, three down after 12, birdied 13, only for Ilonen to hole a 12-footer to go three up with four to play.
The Swedish Ryder Cup player pulled one back but was unable to do any more as Ilonen sealed it on the 17th.
"The game plan was not to make any mistakes, you can't afford those with Henrik," said Ilonen, who takes his fifth win on the European Tour.
"I felt really comfortable going into the final. I felt like I had a good chance of beating him and I did."
Stenson won the FedEx Cup and the Race to Dubai last year but is still searching for his first tournament victory of 2014.
"I exceeded my expectations for the week," he said. "I didn't play my best, I was unlucky on a couple of putts but the best player won."
Stenson had earlier won his semi-final against South Africa's George Coetzee on the final hole, while Ilonen defeated Dutchman Joost Luiten 2&1.
Coetzee and Luiten could not be separated over 18 holes in the third-place play-off, with the latter taking it at the first extra hole.
