Captains’ Drive-In Sunday, 3 November
|
| Outgoing Captains, Adrian Bourne & Karen Cottle with Gladstone Small, and incoming Captains Sarah Hussey & Myles Carroll |
|
A fantastic turnout of 21 teams gathered on Sunday for the Captain’s Drive-in. The Texas Scramble format is always great fun and enables members of all abilities to contribute to the team effort. Blessed with dry and sunny conditions, you needed to be well under gross par to stand a chance. See results below: 1st - 54.43 Andy Hemmett, Barry French, Mavis Haeger and Mary Irving 2nd - 56.71 Simeon Potter, Seamus Maher, Howard Goodenough and Sue Wallyn 3rd - 58.71 Phil Johnson, Graham Symonds, Doug Patterson and Caroline Patterson

Well done to all the participants for helping the competition to run smoothly and of course to the Comps & Matches Committee, the man in charge of dodgy balls Mark Fuller, and our photographers Pauline Bourne and Michael Harvie.
After the cards were collected, Mark led everyone out to the 18th green, wherewith putters raised, an arch was formed for Adrian and Karen to “Putt-Out”. Taking a leaf from Bryson DeChambeau, they took the full two minutes to line up their tricky 8ft putts only to find the wobbly balls went a maximum of 3ft, two forward and one sideways! Eventually, to cheers from the gathered masses, they holed out and so brought to a close their year of Captaincy.

Mark then led everyone towards the 1st Tee whilst Sarah and Myles went to find their decorated buggy. Ros Tunbridge and Tim Burke, our new Vice Captains did a terrific job decking out the buggy with Chelsea and Crystal Palace colours, black cats, Guinness cans and some gardening tools!
And so Myles “Alan Titchmarsh” and Sarah “Roy Hodgson” headed for the first tee under the customary arch of Drivers.

|
With plenty of good-natured banter from all the well-wishers, Sarah & Myles proceeded to drive-off and so commence their year as Ladies and Men’s Captains.
Sarah drove it 170 yards, correctly guessed by Wally Coleman.
Myles “3-wooded” it 199 yards correctly guessed by Debbie Rose. Much to Myles’ relief, Dave Allard didn’t win the pot as he estimated 35-40 yards!

| Incredible clubhead speed from a 3 wood smashes the ball to smithereens! (199 yards). |

Back in the function room, presentations were made by Adrian and Karen to their respective charity representatives. Karen presented a cheque for £7,006.10 to ESDAS and Adrian a cheque for £7,288.20 to the Beefy Foundation. Both charities were absolutely delighted to receive much-needed funds for their excellent work and praised the hard work of both Captains and the wonderful generosity of the members of BGC. |

After a few post-AGM trophy presentations, it was finally time for food. The positive momentum mentioned in earlier speeches was reflected in the 70+ members, family and friends who stayed for a superb three-course lunch.
The Captains (and immediate past Captains) would like to say a huge thank-you to Kevin, Tracey, James, Steve and all the staff for looking after everyone so well on the day.

Ladies Pearson Match update
A big well done to our Pearson Team who defeated West Surrey Golf Club this week 4-3. Debbie Rose, Jane Bywaters, Trudy Hall, Sue Munday, Caroline Patterson, Linda Henari and Robyn Cattell.
The three lost matches were very close, so great if the division is decided on points. All played really well, a bit cold and windy but our girls are tough. So far, the Pearson Team have played two won two! Well done ladies. |
#468FCD ;text-align:left">Stats that'll make you thinkYou don’t get to a single-figure handicap without having a strong iron game, but the journey shouldn't end there. For us, there are two key factors that, when combined properly, will help take your iron play to the next level. |
1) Get custom-fitted If you're serious about shooting in the 70s each and every round, then getting custom-fitted for your next set of irons is key. Callaway's Apex and Apex Pro models feel fantastic off the face and provide precise distances and control, but that's no good if you're using the wrong shafts or you need 2-degrees flat but yours are standard. 2) Know your yardages
The second stat above is remarkable and if you're one of the 21%, you need to come and see us for a gapping session. There we can give you the distances you hit each of your clubs as well as spot any issues you have between clubs.
