Club news

Personal Rakes

The Club Pro Shop will now be selling personal rakes that can be stored in your golf bag. The cost for each rake will be £11.95 and will be available from next week.

 

100 Club

The 100 Club Organisers are pleased to announce that the April, May, June (incl. £250 bonus) and July 100 Club draws will be carried out at the Club at lunch time on Tuesday, 28th July. Watch this space for the prize winners names – prizes will be distributed by cheque immediately following the draws.

Best of luck to all 100 Club Members.

Maybe there are some of you who are not aware of how the 100 Club works? For a monthly contribution of £5, all 100 Club Members are entered into the monthly draw. Each month there are two cash prizes of at least £100, in March, June and September the prizes are £250 and £100, and in December £1000 and £100!

For golf rounds played at Bletchingley Golf Club, 100 Club Members also have automatic ‘free’ Hole-in-one cover of £100 per such event*

Approximately 80% of contributions are allocated to the prize fund and 20% to the Club Members Fund to be used for specific projects.

Entry is open to all Bletchingley Golf Club Members and their spouses/partners, aged 18 years or over. More details and application forms are available by contacting Roger Borer at roger.borer@btopenworld.com and also from the Club Office or Pro Shop.

Men’s Winter Singles KO Final (Mayor Cup)

The last Men’s Winter KO Final (finally) took place on Friday, 24th July with Steve Ghost and Nick Mabbutt competing for the Mayor Cup.

The 1st hole was halved with a brace of impressive pars and the next few holes were noteworthy for the quality of both players driving. Not for the first time though, the 5th hole caused both players problems and after a couple of scrappy holes Nick had opened up a 3-hole lead, only to see Steve come roaring back to be level walking off the 10th.

Nick again played impressively to take the 11th and 12th and open a slender lead which he just held onto until the 17th where a sparkling birdie completed a 2&1 win.

Congratulations Nick and better luck next time Steve.

A fantastic turnout of 78 players took part in my Captain’s Day last Saturday.

Despite the gloomy weather, there was plenty of colour on display and some rather fetching outfits not usually seen on a golf course. Steve thought he’d have a bumper day selling white socks but for one day only, this really was the full Monty.

Congratulations to all the prize winners, I’ll try and get these to everyone over the coming weeks.

Runners up in the team event with 88 points were the glamourous trio of Debbie Rose, Viv Harrison and Gerry Edwards. But the winners with 91 points were Keith Hopkins, Charlie Hopkins and Chris O’Loughlin. Well played guys.

Thank you so much to everyone who supported the day, it was great fun seeing all the crazy combinations. It’s such a shame that we’re unable to hold a normal prize giving but hopefully you all enjoyed the day.

I must also add a huge thanks to my wife Debra for organising the food and cooking her own delicious bread pudding, chocolate brownie & lemon drizzle cake. As there was nothing left to take home I guess it went down a treat!

Golf on Tour

The UK Swing begins

The British Masters finally gave European Tour fans something to cheer. Whilst the Tour had technically resumed with a couple of weakened fields in Austria, this was the first ‘proper’ European Tour event since lockdown began all those months ago. Renato Paratore was the eventual winner, with the young Italian going 62 holes before his first bogey on the 9th in the final round.

Paratore’s incredible golf came at a soggy Close House course, hosted by Lee Westwood, in the first of a six-tournament “UK Swing”. This week, players high enough in the World Rankings can choose between the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational or the English Open. Next week, it will be a choice between staying put for the English Championship or heading to San Francisco for the first Major of 2020; the PGA Championship. Things are about to get interesting!

Time to update your wedges?

That moment when you pitch the ball close to the pin and stop it on a dime for a tap-in putt is like no other. It dramatically reduces your score whilst looking awesome. As with all shots, it requires both technique and confidence, not to mention wedges with sharp grooves.

A recent survey highlighted that a third of golfers carry wedges that are over five years old. We appreciate that everyone has a club or two in their bag that they love but grooves will gradually deteriorate over time.
