Festival of Golf 2020 With the mercury rising above 35 degrees, we had 79 participants signed up for the annual Festival of Golf. The course was running hotter than a US Open venue and anyone with an air-conditioned cap had a distinct advantage. The Sunday Stableford attracted 20 players, evenly split between men and ladies but you needed to be under your handicap to feature. A terrific 39 points saw Gill Brack in 3rd place and Kieron Young as runner-up with 41 points. But proving the value of experience over youth it was Alan Hill who won with a fantastic score of 43 points.
The John Shephard Trophy (over 55’s - 36 hole net score) was won by the ever popular Terry Gay with a total of 153. |

In Division 2, the Ellen Dawson trophy (nett prize) produced a close finish with Chris O’Loughlin 3rd on 155, and Douglas Hay runner up on 154. The winner, also on 154 but with a nett 75 on day two was Nick Mabbutt. | | Nick Mabbutt - Ellen Dawson Trophy & FootJoy Cooljoys |
In Division 1, it was Terry Gay in 3rd with 153, Ian McGowan 2nd on 152 but the clear winner of the Mattinson Salver with a nett 144 was Mike Everton. . . | | Mike “Reload” Everton - Mattinson Salver |

So, onto the Club Championships. A large crowd gathered across from the 18th green to see the final groups approaching.
Probably shot of the day (and certainly something we’ve never seen before) belonged to Andy Hemmett.
His approach to 18 toppled into the pond but with the water level so low, found a dry spot from where he chipped onto the green. Nerves of steel Mr. H. . . | | Shot of the Day |
As Steve entered the last cards onto the system, a look of mild panic came across Tim’s face, we need a play-off. Three players finished on 170 and despite the heat, had to head back down 16 for a 3-hole play-off. Defending Champion Kevin Lucas, Mike Everton & Ian McGowan had their own personal gallery as they teed off to break the deadlock. But with a two-shot gap over the three holes, it was Ian McGowan who sealed the win to become Club Champion for 2020. | | Club Champion – Ian McGowan |

A massive thank-you to the Comps & Matches committee for organising the day & to Steve Cookson for getting all 79 cards processed in record time. Myles. |
Ladies Festival of Golf Trophy
13 intrepid ladies battled the extreme heat and the amazing amount of run on the ball to compete for this annaul trophy over two days, which involved some great peformances. Sarah Hussey won the best 18 hole prize for Saturday and Ros Tunbride triumphed on Sunday, both with a nice steady 36 points. These przes are awarded for those who don’t place in the main two day competition. In the main competition Caroline Patterson came in third place with an aggregate score of 70 and Debbie Rose was second after two very consistent rounds of 36 giving her a score of 72. The winner by four shots with an aggregate score of 76 points, including a fantastic 40 points on Saturday, was El Rhodes, so big congratulations to her.

The wait was worth it The long wait for a Major was worth it. What an incredible PGA Championship we saw at TPC Harding Park! A highly-competitive tournament saw everybody from rising stars to relative unknowns and, of course, Brooks Koepka all have a pop at the Wanamaker Trophy. In the end, it was rising star Collin Morikawa who came out on top. Usually, pars are enough when you hold the lead on Sunday at a Major, but not this time. A six-under 64, including a chip-in birdie on 14 and an eagle on the 16th, took Morikawa to -13 for the week to claim an incredible victory aged 23 and in just his second Major start. We had a poll on our website last week that asked who was most likely to dominate golf over the next decade. Jon Rahm was by far the favourite - he's back to World Number One now - followed by Koepka and then Justin Thomas. The egg is certainly on our face for not including Morikawa in our list! Maybe next time… |
#468FCD ;text-align:left">The importance of being fittedEveryone would like to be told they’re a ‘great iron player’, but you’re making it a lot harder for yourself if you don’t have irons that are matched-up to get the best out of your swing. |
All of the world’s best golfers get their equipment regularly tweaked on Tour – you’ve probably seen each brand’s tour van sitting alongside the range when watching golf on TV – which goes to show just how important it is. We have a fantastic set-up at Bletchingley Golf Club that will make the fitting experience a really enjoyable one for you. One of the brands you can try is Callaway, who have a brilliant iron model called Apex, which offers playability in a Tour-preferred shape that you’re going to love.
