Carr Coffee Pot Final Friday, 2nd October It was early but certainly not bright when the CCP final started between Gerry Edwards and Mark Fuller against El and Phil Rhodes. Storm Alex was starting to get into full swing as the four set off down the first. Conditions were pretty awful and the casual water on the first tee did not bode well for the completion of the match. Fortunately, the rain was not as bad as had been forecast (although it kept raining for most of the round) and the final kept on. Despite hostile weather, the golf was good and tight. Wins on the first six holes alternated between the pairs and the 8th was the first hole halved. A win on the 9th saw the Rhodes one up at the turn. All four had played well but not one par in the first nine, thanks to storm Alex. The second nine was different. The players had clearly got used to the conditions and the scoring was considerably better with most holes being won or halved in par. El and Phil were two up after 11, the biggest leading margin throughout the match. Gerry and Mark stayed with them and took a one shot lead at the 15th, the first time they had been ahead. |
As was fitting for a match this tight, it went the whole way with Gerry and Mark finally winning on the 18th. After nine attempts, this was the first final win in the CCP for Mark and Gerry; El and Phil were looking for successive wins. As you would expect, the game was played in great spirit. The competition was fierce but friendly and I thoroughly enjoyed watching it. Preparing for refereeing the final, I had read that a good referee must always be careful on the green not to get between the ball and the gallery. I managed that pretty well as we only saw one other mad fool the whole time we were out! Congratulations to all four. Alan Cottle. |

MacMillan Coffee Morning Since 2008 there has been a MacMillan Biggest Coffee Morning at the Golf Club on the last Friday in September – hosted by the Ladies Section. This year, because of the difficult situation this was not possible. The members who usually arrange this event asked members and friends to host their own mornings and with lunches, donations and huge support they have raised £1455.75. An incredible result, and they would like to thank everyone for their generosity. |
World Handicapping System Let's get clued up The new World Handicap System (WHS) comes into effect on the 2nd November 2020, which is now less than a month away. We know that many of you have questions about what it is, why it's needed and how it will impact your current handicap. Well, the WHS has put together lots of easy-to-understand videos that will, hopefully, answer these and more. If you're still unsure after giving them a watch, pop by the pro shop for a chat. |

Golf's back on UK soil
When Sergio Garcia won The Masters in 2017, every headline was along the lines of ‘Finally!’. More than three years later, his win at the PGA Tour’s Sanderson Farms Championship marks his first win since and prompted many similar headlines. Although, did you know both victories involved Sergio putting with his eyes shut at impact? On the European Tour, Tommy Fleetwood looked to cap the return of the big names at the Scottish Open, a Rolex Series event, with a victory. But fellow Englishman Aaron Rai upset the odds to beat Fleetwood in a playoff that saw Tommy miss from a couple of feet at the first playoff hole. Both storylines demonstrate the importance of putting well when the pressure's on. So, if you struggle with holing out or three-putt too many times due to poor distance control, send us a message below and we'll be happy to help.
