Captain v Vice-Captain Challenge
Sunday, 25 October

The annual match took place on Sunday in cool wet and very muddy conditions. 56 players made up 14 matches, and the first to 7.5 points would win the Quaitch Trophy.

The plan was simple, lead from the front and get points on the board early. Unfortunately, the only thing early was a consolation mocha in the clubhouse as Tim and Graham Wallace took me and Andy Trainor to the cleaners with a 6&5 beating.

Thankfully the rest of my team fared somewhat better, although, some matches were very close including three halved.

In the end it was a 7.5 to 6.5 win for the Captain and a socially distanced presentation saw me collect the trophy, a nice way to round off my year as Captain.

Massive thanks to everyone who braved the tough conditions as we now look forward to next week’s Texas Scramble (72 signed up so far) and the Putt-Out / Drive-in.

It’s been an absolute honour to serve as Captain and thank you so much to all the members for all your support over the past year. We’ve raised a terrific amount for our Charities despite all the challenges, more details to follow next week.

Club news

New COVID Clubhouse Protocol

Following the recent government announcement and seeking advice from England Golf, I wanted to put on record Wiseville’s position with regards to the current clubhouse rules.

Tier 1 and Tier 2 households are permitted to sit in the same bar or restaurant area. Golfers from Tier 2 must sit on their own at a table unless they are accompanied by another household member. Wiseville will be insisting on members from different tiers, not to mix within the clubhouse. This will prove extremely hard for Wiseville to police and kindly request that members take it upon themselves to adhere to these rules. Signs will be put up around the clubhouse making visitors aware of the same ruling and society organisers will also be informed.

As an option, we are looking at the possibility of designating the Grand Slam Bar for Tier 2 households if we become overwhelmed with footfall in the coming months.

Final of the Men’s Summer Pairs (Clarke Cup)

Our last White tee competition took place at the weekend with the conclusion of the Men’s Summer Pairs with Pat Wilkins & Chris Tyler up against Gary Walker & Seamus Maher. With the recent rain softening up the course and some blustery conditions on the day, the course (from the Whites) was playing really long with pars or better hard to come by, but despite this Gary and Seamus took an early lead going 3UP by the 7th.

For the next phase of the match, Pat and Chris nibbled away at the lead, in particular a great birdie by Chris at the 10th helped reduce the arrears to just 1 by the time the match reached the 15th tee.

Battling up the 15th into a strong wind only Gary and Pat made it to the green and with Gary pipping Pat by a shot Gary & Seamus took a 2-hole lead going to the 16th. On the 16th Pat hit too great shots to leave a 15-footer for birdie, but with Seamus receiving a stroke he was in equally good shape about 14 feet away in 3 nett 2. Unfortunately for Pat his birdie putt came up a fraction short, then up stepped Seamus to sink his put for a nett birdie and ensure he and Gary won the match 3&2.

Congratulations to Gary and Seamus on a fantastic win and commiserations to Pat and Chris after a great run through to the final.

Golf on Tour

It's not over yet!

The golfing season would have pretty much finished by this point if it were a ‘normal year’. The men’s game would have named its four Major champions, the women’s game its five big winners, and another cracking Ryder Cup enjoyed.

Sadly, this hasn’t been the case but the good – okay, great - news is that there are still two Majors left to play: an autumnal Masters Tournament from Augusta National and the U.S Women’s Open from Champions Golf Club.

We'll find out who'll be wearing the Green Jacket in just a couple of weeks, and the world’s best are certainly finding their A-games in preparation. Patrick Cantlay won the weekend’s Zozo Championship by one shot from Justin Thomas and Jon Rahm; Rory McIlroy made a record-breaking 29 birdies over the same four days, albeit he mixed them with 8 bogeys and 3 doubles; Hatton and Fitzpatrick are performing well both sides of the Atlantic; DJ is fresh off the back of his FedEx Cup triumph and Bryson is testing longer driver shafts as his looks to dominate Augusta.
