Greens Update
So far in April the weather conditions have not been conducive to growing grass, we are repeatedly receiving morning frosts and the lack of rain fall is certainly hampering the improvement of the putting surfaces. One of the members asked me the other day why we were not using the irrigation, would that not help?
My reply was that it wouldn't help because the temperature of the water in the reservoir would only bring the ground temperature down even further. At the moment the green keepers are doing all they can to provide a quality putting surface, but we are now praying for an increase in temperature and some rainfall in the coming weeks. I still have full confidence that the greens this summer will be immaculate.
Club Spring Meeting
Congratulations to Colin Crick who won Division 1 in the Mens competition. Colin won after countback as there were three players tied on 33 points, a respectable score in some very windy conditions.
Division 2 was also very close however it was Bill Penfold who came out on top winning with 34 points.
As always I like to leave the best till last and that was from our ladies division. El Rhodes shot a staggering 41 points which included an eagle 3 on the par 5 15th!
Sunday Swindle Away Day
Last Sunday the Sunday Swindle held their away day at The Dyke Golf Club. Twenty seven members travelled down to the south coast near Brighton. The winner of the day was Colin Crick with 37 points in slightly blustery conditions. The day was a great success and thoroughly enjoyed by all. Thanks must go to Lesley Crick for her efforts in organising the day.
Bletchingley Memorial Trophy
Congratulations to Viv Harrrison and Tim Burke on winning the inaugural 2014 Bletchingley Memorial Trophy by beating Debbie Rose and Alan Bott on a murky Good Friday morning. Although Debbie and Alan played well, Viv and Tim played "a blinder" and gave no quarter.
This event is new and is a mixed winter Greensomes competition, which the committee felt complimented the summer foursomes Carr Coffee Pot. After some discussion if was decided that as the Competition started in 2014, it was fitting to name the trophy in memory of the start of the Great War in 1914.
Jim Fuyrk Wins RBC Heritage
Jim Furyk earned his first PGA Tour win since 2010 after he beat fellow American Kevin Kisner via a play-off to seal the RBC Heritage.
Furyk, 44, started the final day four shots behind overnight leader Troy Merritt on 10 under. But a final eight-under round of 63 took him into a play-off, where he defeated Kisner after two extra holes.
Masters champion Jordan Spieth, 21, finished tied 11th on 10 under after a closing round of 70.
England's Luke Donald finished tied for 15th on nine under after he carded 70 too. Spieth hit three birdies on his front nine to move to 13 under, but a bogey at the par-four 10th and a double bogey at the par-three 13th left him out of the running.
Furyk, the 2003 US Open champion, carded nine birdies during his final round, with only a bogey on the 11th marking his card. Kisner, 31, birdied the last to take it to a play-off. Both men birdied the 18th second time around but Furyk's greater experienced told as he birdied the short 17th with a 12-foot putt after his opponent missed.
It denied Kisner a maiden PGA Tour victory and was Furyk's 17th Tour win
